FAQs about the Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze System

What does the limited lifetime warranty from my manufacturer on my concrete tile roof cover?

The limited lifetime warranty from your roof tile manufacturer covers the structural integrity of the roof tiles only. Please note that color is not covered in concrete roof tile systems. Factors such as maintenance and external influences determine how long the color of your tile roof will remain vibrant. We strongly advise homeowners to exercise caution when selecting individuals to work on their tile roof systems.

How can I increase the color life of my tile roof?

Similar to how new cars receive a protective barrier for their color systems, your tile roof can benefit from a similar treatment. When you apply Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze to your roof, it safeguards the "factory finish" of the tiles and protects them from the sun's harmful rays and weathering.

Aren't the roof tiles sealed in the factory?

While it is true that roof tiles are temporarily sealed in the factory, there are limitations due to the curing process of concrete tiles. Roof tile manufacturers can only use a minimal amount of protective sealer. By applying Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze in the field, we can provide ample protection against the elements. This is because we don't have to account for the 30-day cure process. Applying the protective glaze after tile roof installation allows the tiles to cure without any interference. Moreover, it ensures that the point up or mud work used to install trim pieces is also sealed and protected, preventing water penetration.

Can I paint my roof with a high-quality acrylic paint?

Yes, it is possible to paint your roof with acrylic paint, but it's important to note that most manufacturers do not offer warranties when their paint is applied to roofing tiles. Paint is specifically designed for vertical surfaces and has properties that make it susceptible to cracking, peeling, and fading on a tile roof. Additionally, paint is not water repellent, which allows organic materials to grow freely. It's crucial to understand that paint is formulated for walls and not for the concrete tiles used in roofing.

Can I use any standard concrete sealer on my tile roof?

Yes, we recommend using sealers for your concrete tile roof. However, not all concrete sealers are equal in quality and performance. It's best to choose a concrete sealer specifically designed and tested for tile roofs, such as Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze. This product has been trusted by roof tile manufacturers and roofing contractors for many years due to its effectiveness.

What is the difference in application between painting and Hydro-Sheen?

Paint is primarily intended for vertical surfaces and is not suitable for 100% exposure like a roof. Most paint manufacturers offer warranties for their products, but these warranties may be voided when applied to roof tiles. On the other hand, Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze is specifically designed for concrete and clay roof tiles. It is not a paint but a roof tile sealer. Before making a decision for your roof, please check the specific warranties provided by the product manufacturer.

What is a warranty failure with Hydro-Sheen and how does it occur?

We have been applying Hydro-Sheen for over two decades, and it has proven to be a reliable product. Warranty failures typically occur due to human error, such as inadequate washing of the tiles before application. Mold, pollen, and Gleocapsa can grow underneath the glazing system and cause material popping. To minimize the risk of failure, our focus on washing and preparation is meticulous. We recommend working with Hydro-Sheen certified contractors who understand the correct application process.

How long will Hydro-Sheen last?

The duration of Hydro-Sheen's effectiveness depends on the application. Our warranty ranges from five (5) years for clear coats to twelve (12) years for Hydro-Sheen Colored systems. To maintain maximum effectiveness, we suggest having your tile roof washed and re-glazed with a clear coat of Hydro-Sheen every 8 to 10 years.

Can I change the color(s) of my tile roof?

Absolutely! Our installation process includes a primer coat of Hydro-Bond Surface Stabilizer, which prepares the surface for the color(s) of your choice. Switching colors is a straightforward process, and we do it regularly. You can browse through our before and after pictures to see the transformative effect a color change can have on your roof. We offer a wide range of colors, including "The Clay Look," which emulates the colors of expensive clay tile roofs at a more affordable cost. We can create any color you desire, allowing you to match it with other elements of your project.

What are flash colors?

Flash colors refer to the application of a second or sometimes third color on roof tiles to create a dimensional look with depth and interest. Flashing adds character, depth, and dimension to your tile roof, enhancing its overall appearance.

How can I protect my tile roof with the Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze?

Certified Hydro-Sheen contractors offer tile roof "tune-ups," which typically include an inspection, replacement of broken tiles, resealing of flashing, and repair of any issues affecting performance. Similar to a vehicle checkup, once your tile roof has been inspected, a certified contractor can apply the Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze System to protect it. You can find a list of certified roofing contractors on our website to assist you in locating a qualified professional in your area.

Will Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze stop my roof leak?

Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze is not designed to stop leaks, but it can help prevent water from penetrating the roof tiles. However, leaks are often associated with flashing failures or broken tiles. Before applying the Hydro-Sheen Tile Roof Glaze System, it's advisable to have your tile roof inspected by a certified professional roofing contractor to address any potential issues.
